* FONTPAC 5 *
* *
* Fontpac 5 contains proportional fonts for Brother M1409 printers *
* These may be distributed in the public domain so long as this file *
* (or the relevant acknowledgements at the end of this file) is *
* included on any disk on which they are distributed. *
* *
* Version 1.0 (30th May 1989) *
* *
***********************************************************************
This is one of a series of font disks which are intended to supplement
the fonts packages 'Fontkit' and 'Fontkit Plus'. Fontkit is a PD
collection of fonts and font programs, including a simple font editor
and a font-loading accessory called 'Fontsel', and Fontkit Plus is an
enhanced version of Fontkit which contains a more powerful font editor
and an improved font-loading accessory called 'Fontswitch'.
Fonts in Fontpac 5 may be downloaded onto Brother M1409 printers
which are fitted with an optional font card containing extra RAM and
some additional ROM fonts (consult a Brother dealer for more
information on this).
***********************************************************************
* *
* PLEASE NOTE that before attempting to download fonts you should *
* reset dip switch SW2-3 to OFF. Please consult your printer manual *
* about this, and make sure your printer is switched off first. *
* *
* If you you use First Word or First Word Plus you will probably *
* want to edit your printer driver to disable the line which says *
* '21, 1B, 40', so as to prevent downloaded fonts from being erased *
* from the printer's memory whenever a document has been printed. *

Atari metacharacter fonts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These can be used in conjuntion with Fontsel or Fontswitch to print all
of the foreign and scientific characters from the standard Atari meta-
character set. To make use of these fonts you should configure Fontsel
or Fontswitch so that EP_ATARI.TRS is installed as the default
translation table (or load it temporarily from the Printout option).
Then, before you print a document containing these characters, you
should download either X3_ATARI.FON or S1_ATARI.FON and click on
'Translate' (DO NOT click on the downloaded font). If you are using
First Word or First Word Plus you will need to disable the character
translation table used by these programs; you can do this by editing
your printer's HEX file and putting an asterisk in front of the
translation equivalents for characters from 128 upwards. Then use
INSTALL.PRG to create a new printer driver from the modified HEX file.
Foreign/scientific fonts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fontpac 5 also contains screen and printer fonts for typing and
printing Greek or Hebrew. These can be used in conjunction with
Fontswitch from Fontkit Plus. To make use of these fonts you should
use FCONFIG.PRG to configure Fontswitch so that the relevant keyboard
table (*.MSH file) and character translation table (*.TRS file) is
installed (alternative tables can also be loaded from disk as
required), and copy the relevant screen font(s) into a 'fonts' folder
(a folder named 'fonts') on a boot disk which also contains a copy of
Fontswitch. Screen fonts may then be selected from Fontswitch's screen
font selector, and the associated printer fonts may be used in
conjunction with Fontswitch's character translation facility to provide
the necessary printer characters (see Fontkit Plus manual for details).
If you are using First Word or First Word Plus you will need to disable
the character translation table used by these programs: put an asterisk
in front of translation equivalents for characters from 128 upwards in
your printer's HEX file, and then use INSTALL.PRG to install the
modified HEX file.
There is also a wide selection of foreign/scientific screen and printer
fonts and tables on Fontpac 8. This includes fonts and tables for most
European languages, plus Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, and Syriac.
Additional notes on Hebrew/Greek fonts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. The Hebrew/Greek fonts supplied on this disk are new versions which
are significantly different from the Hebrew/Greek fonts supplied with
Fontkit Plus. If you have been using the old versions you can convert
existing documents to use the new fonts by using HBGK.CFL (on this
disk) in conjunction with CFILT.TOS from the Fontkit Plus Accessory
Pack.
2. The two Hebrew/Greek keyboard tables (HBGK1.MSH and HBGK2.MSH) are
identical except that HBGK1.MSH contains lunate Sigma while HBGK2.MSH
has separate medial and final Sigmas - use whichever you prefer.
Proportional fonts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Proportional printer fonts can be used with any wordprocessor, but give
best results if you have a wordprocessor which uses character width
tables to calculate how many characters can be fitted on each line
(wordprocessors which do this include Final Word, Protext, and Word
Perfect). If your wordprocessor does offer this facility you can use
Fontkit Plus's List Widths option to generate width tables which can be
then copied or edited. If your wordprocessor does not have a width
table facility (First Word and First Word Plus do not) you can still
use proportional fonts, so long as you switch off justification and
type around 78 characters to the line, or slightly less with lines
containing a large number of uppercase letters.
